In this article, I will share my experience of renting a car in Spain to make the process easier for future travellers. Stay ahead of possible difficulties and follow my recommendations to maximise your travelling experience.
1. Licence and age: A national driving licence issued in your country of residence is required to hire a car in Spain. A credit card in the name of the main driver will also be required. Be aware that the age threshold may be higher than 21 years old, and additional restrictions and surcharges may apply for younger drivers.
2. Renting a car at the airport: The procedure for renting a car at the airport or in the city centre, for example in Barcelona, is quite simple, but during the summer season it is advisable to book in advance to avoid queues. This will speed up the processing and ensure the choice of car.
3. Fuel and prices: Choose Alcampo petrol stations for better petrol prices. They often offer lower rates per litre. Remember that promotions at petrol stations may be available to regular customers. Here are some average fuel prices:
- Petrol 95: € 1.587
- Petrol 98: € 1.746
- Diesel: € 1,420
- Gas (LPG): € 0.925
4. Emergency services: Memorise in advance the emergency numbers such as 112 (emergency services), 091 (police), 061 (medical emergency), 080 (fire) and 092 (local police). This can be useful in case of emergencies.
5. Rental costs: Prices for car hire in Spain can vary. For 7 days with unlimited mileage and a full tank, here is a comparison of prices from different services:
- Budget class: € 162 to € 185
- Middle class: € 186 to € 205
- Universal/Crossover: from € 271 to € 307
- Minivan: from € 301 to € 338
